Class of 2005

Class Size: 122 students graduated from the class of 2005 with medical degress, 11 with PhD’s and 42 with MS degrees.

Commencement Speaker: Herbert W. Boyer, PhD, Co-founder of Genentech Inc., Professor Emeritus – University of California at San Francisco

Pop Culture: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell was one of the top 10 books in 2005 and American Idiot by Green Day was one of the top 10 CDs.


  • Youtube is launched: the first video is uploaded at 8:27 PM
  • The Huygens probe lands on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn.


Class of 2006

Timeline of Events

2002 – The Class of 2006 enters Albany Medical College.

         – NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey Space Probe begins to map the surface of Mars using its thermal emission imaging system.

2005 – The Alden March Bioethics Institute was founded. The institute is a successor to the Center for Medical Ethics, Education, and Research and the Albany Medical College/Graduate College of Union University Master’s Program in bioethics.

2006 – The 168th commencement exercises take place. The graduating class consists of 130 MD candidates, 9 candidates for PhD degrees and 57 master’s degree candidates.  The commencement address is given by Robert S. Langer, Sc.D, Germeshausen Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Class of 2010

Class Size: 127 students graduated from the class of 2010 with medical degrees, 11 with PhD’s and 74 with MS degrees.

Commencement Speaker: Joan Steitz, PhD, Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University.

Pop Culture: The Hurt Locker won the Oscar for Best Film and Time Magazine’s Person of the Year was Mark Zuckerberg.


  • The 2010 Winter Olympics are held in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada.
  • Volcanic ash from one of several eruptions beneath Mount Eyjafjallajokull, an Icelandic ice cap, disrupts air traffic across northern and western Europe.


Class of 2011

The 2011 commencement was the first commencement to have graduates joining military service take the oath of commissioning to join the profession of arms. The medical graduates were commissioned as officers by the retired 41st Surgeon General of the Army, Kevin C. Kiley, MD, AMC's Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Timeline of Events

2007 – The class of 2011 enters Albany Medical College.

         - Apple Inc's CEO and founder, Steve Jobs, announces the first generation iphone.

        – Albany Medical Center announces the grand opening of the Physician’s Pavilion.

2011 – Dr. Charles Dinarello, Professor of Medicine & Immunology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, addresses the 173rd commencement exercises at Albany Medical College. The graduating class consists of 148 MD candidates, 11 candidates for PhD degrees and 41 master’s degree candidates.


Class of 2015

Did you know...?

Albany Medical College’s Biomedical Acceleration and Commercialization Center (BACC) was launched in 2015. By 2016 it housed seven companies, more than half its capacity.

212 degrees were awarded at the 2015 commencement ceremonies. The Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) had the largest number of graduates with 14 masters’ degrees and six doctorates awarded at the 2015 commencement.

Medical Milestones for 2015

  • For the first time, researchers at Johns Hopkins used biodegradable nanoparticles to kill brain cancer cells in animals and lengthen their survival.
  • The FDA approved a new drug, Ibrance (palbociclib), for treating advanced breast cancer.


Class of 2016

Did you know...?

  • In 2016 Albany Med announced plans for the Pediatric Emergency Department, the only one of its kind in our region.
  • The BACC (Biomedical Acceleration and Commercialization Center) Academy was launched in 2016, a collaboration of the Medical College and Siena College. The Academy, a 13-week educational program, is focused on creating biotech entrepreneurs.
  • 140 students graduated in 2016 from Albany Medical College with medical degrees, 25 students received Master of Science degrees in Nurse Anesthesiology, 40 received Master of Science degrees in Physician Assistant Studies and 12 received either Master of Science or doctoral degrees in the biomedical sciences, 14 students received master’s degrees from the Alden March Bioethics Institute, and 5 received a doctorate in professional studies.
